Lake Toxaway is located in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and as a private resort, has been a vacation and summer playground for the rich and famous such as Edison, Ford, DuPont, et al in the early 1900s. History shows that in 1916 heavy rains caused the lake dam to fail. The resort sat vacant for over 40 years, trees actually grew in the dry lake bed! In the 1950s, a family rebuilt the dam and opened the lakefront for growth. There are private residences and second homes on the lake with an impressive array of amenities. Several thousand acres comprise the Lake Toxaway Estates, and only property owners (and their guests) are permitted access to the lake and surrounding features.
It’s hard to imagine a more perfect setting in Western North Carolina than Lake Toxaway Estates, home to the state’s largest private lake. Since the turn of the century, people have been drawn to Lake Toxaway. They sought out the clear, crystal waters and invigorating mountain breezes that provided welcomed relief from the thick, stagnant heat of summer. Today, Lake Toxaway is still attracting families and individuals who crave something more. The home offerings, luxury amenities, recreational opportunities, and privileged lifestyle are unprecedented in the region. Lake Toxaway offers families an abundant living experience that will grow more treasured each year as these types of communities become increasingly rare.
For shopping, the town of Brevard is just 17 miles away; and the town of Cashiers is only 13 miles. A Dollar General store is only 2 miles away for quick necessities. For the winter months, skating at the Highlands Ice Skating Rink is a must. The small town of Highlands, surrounded by national forest and nestled in the mountains at 4118' of elevation, appears like a Norman Rockwell painting. The town plan lays out ideally for visitors and residents alike to easily walk and enjoy the quaint shops and plentiful restaurants or sit on a bench and watch the world go by. Steepled churches, rhododendron walkways and front porches adorned with rocking chairs make for a handsome picture perfect postcard. The town green space is named after Samuel Hutchinson and Clinton Kelsey who founded Highlands in 1875. The state of the art rink was a gift to the town by Art and Angela Williams of Old Edwards Inn and Spa. Open from November to March, Thursday - Tuesday, the ice rink entices families and singles to wrap themselves in fleece and don their skates.
